Political Issues We Should Be Talking About More
Nowadays, it seems that politics are ever-present in the news. However, not all of the political issues that we should discuss are being given the attention they deserve. From education to healthcare, there are a variety of topics with potential solutions that we should be considering. Here are a few political issues that we should be talking about more.
- Education
Education is especially important in today’s society, as it can have long-term consequences for the generations to come. That’s why some of us are disappointed that the nationwide education system has not been given the attention it deserves. What’s more, there is a growing issue of disparities in our educational system.
Specific areas that need to be addressed include providing better access to high-quality education for all. We also need to make sure that we have appropriate and up-to-date curriculum in all schools rather than have some schools that are lagging behind.
Finally, we need to address the way that students are recruited and retained. That means improving how students get to school, how students stay in school, how students access resources, and how students learn in the classroom.
- Healthcare
Healthcare is an ever-present political issue that impacts everyone at some level. From taxes to medical costs, Americans need to be discussing how healthcare can be improved instead of passing it by. This means discussing how to reduce the skyrocketing costs of health insurance and how to close the gaps in access and quality care.
Moreover, we should be talking about how to enhance healthcare providers’ ability to serve patients, regardless of race. Lastly, we need to look into how to improve the quality and availability of preventative healthcare services like mental health or addiction in order to reduce strain on our healthcare system in the future.
- Criminal Justice
The criminal justice system is another pressing issue in the U.S. today. We need to have conversations about how to make sure that the system is fair and just for everyone. This means making sure that individuals accused of a crime get a fair trial and have access to an attorney.
Moreover, we should look at how to reform the sentencing guidelines so that people are not incarcerated for longer periods of time than necessary. We also need to be talking about how to prevent further incarceration based on injustices like plea bargaining or inadequate defense, and looking into alternatives to prison, like support and rehabilitation.
- Immigration
Immigration has been a hot-button political topic for years, and yet there is still work to be done. We need to discuss resources and services available to immigrants and how to make immigration laws more humane.
It is also important to discuss how to provide a path to citizenship for some of the millions of people living in the country without legal status, how to make sure immigration enforcement is fair, and how to create a better asylum system.
- Economy
The economy impacts us all in some way, or another and is too important to be overlooked. We should be talking about how to build an economy that works for everyone, rather than a few. This means discussing policies like a living wage and job opportunities for lower-income individuals.
We should also be talking about how to encourage economic growth that is inclusive and sustainable. This means providing tax incentives for small businesses, green energy initiatives, access to capital for minority communities, and rebuilding infrastructure. All of these initiatives can help our economy recover, while also helping to benefit everyone.
These are just a few of the political issues that we should be discussing more. We need to have serious conversations about these topics and recognize that they impact us all. Only by doing so can we ensure that we come up with the right solutions and create a better future for everyone.
