In today’s world, politics have an undeniable and ever growing impact in our day-to-day lives. With so many competing interests, growing global instability and rising levels of economic and social complexity, global politics require a special kind of understanding. Everything from geopolitical strategies to international trade agreements are topics in the study of global politics –– topics which help us to form a comprehensive understanding of the world on a wider scale.
In this article, we will attempt to break down the various areas of global politics and discuss their significance. We will discuss five main topics, which include: geopolitics, foreign affairs, international trade, global governance and international security. By understanding each of these areas, the reader can gain a better appreciation of the intricacies of the complex global political landscape which currently exists.
Geopolitics
Geopolitics is a term which refers to the relationship between geography and politics. It is based on the belief that geographical features shape the political course of a state. It includes the analysis of political geography, such as land boundaries, naval strength, natural resources, population growth and other geographical features, in order to better understand the politics of each country or region. By understanding the different governing systems, the landscape of natural resources and the population of each global region, countries and states are better prepared for potential conflicts or negotiations.
Foreign Affairs
Foreign affairs encompass international relations between states, their respective governments and other organizations such as international governmental organizations (IGOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and multinational corporations (MNCs). It also includes the relations between governments and non-state actors such as citizens and certain civil society organizations and individuals. In foreign affairs, governments consider issues such as global development, international disputes, global security, economic affairs, and even scientific collaboration among nations.
International Trade
International trade is the exchange of goods and services between countries. It is facilitated through various agreements, import and export regulations, and through various institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It makes goods and services more accessible to people around the world, creates jobs, and generally increases global wealth and health.
Global Governance
Global governance is the complex network of relationships, opportunities and constraints that shape the individual and collective decisions made within and across states and other institutions. It includes the ways global decisions – both formal and informal – are managed and implemented by states, international organizations, non-governmental agencies and global corporations. Different global forums also exist to discuss global governance issues, such as the United Nations General Assembly and the World Economic Forum.
International Security
International security is a broad topic that covers a variety of issues which concern all nations. These issues include the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), cybersecurity, international terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, piracy, and the protection of human rights. To adequately tackle these issues, nations must coordinate their efforts to ensure a secure global environment.
